GVA FAQS

1. Why is it necessary to accept so many invitations when joining GVA?

Each GVA page is actually a separate blog site. While you can open and view any page by way of a posted link, the only way for you to be able to post to any GVA page is to accept the invitations. Yes, this process is a little awkward at first, but you only need to accept the invitations one time.

2. Will I be given a schedule to fly at GVA?

No you will not!! One of the strong points of GVA is our philosophy. Like our slogan says, we are a "personal aerial limousine service direct to your destination". This means you fly when you want, where you want. The only limitations are the number of flights all pilots must make in/out of KLWB or KHSP per month and the size of acceptable aircraft. Pilots are therefore free to engage their personal likes and desires to the fullest.

3. What type of aircraft are appropriate for use with GVA?

What do you like to fly? The only limitations are aircraft size--6 to 8 passengers plus crew. The only exception is the fleet of DC-3's.

4. Can I fly my personal repaints?

Yes you can. However you may not do a repaint that can be construed to be a look alike of the official GVA repaints nor can you display the GVA logo and slogan. Your personal, custom repaints are welcome otherwise.

5. When can I start to publish my screen shots?

As soon as you like, once you are an active member you are expected to share your adventures with everyone else.

6. What can I expect from my time with GVA?

Exactly what you put into the experience. If you are happy to fly only a few flights per month and don't desire to get into the comments and discussions, picture posting, and general fun that's fine. If you want to do more, please join in to the fullest. You will probably never be personally invited to join in every event, that's because you are expected to join in as part of your responsibilities as a member.

8. Can my real world qualifications or flight hours at other VA's be counted as my training flights at GVA, or must I complete the training program?

You must complete the GVA training flights. The training period gives you a chance to do some low and slow flying around West Virginia to check out our airports. You also have the opportunity to check out the KHSP airport during this time. The training period also allows you to become familiar with the GVA flight reporting method and screen shot posting method.

POSTING SCREENSHOTS

Several new members have expressed frustration during the learning process about posting screenshots. Remember that GVA is a series of closed blogs. You cannot make any posts until you first sign in (upper right corner of screen). A detailed process flow diagram for the screenshot posting procedure is available from Dan (dgva001@gmail.com) if you would like one. Please resize your screenshots to about 800X600 pixels or less so that they will fit on one screen (scrolling not necessary) for easy viewing.

EDITING HTML

The below is courtesy of Bill Cox. Let me add, if I can learn this, you can too. It may look like rocket science at first, but it ain't. If you foul up the HTML for any one screenie, the worst that will happen is that the screenie will disappear--you don't wanna know where it goes :-)

Load your pictures first using the compose form for any posting

Click over to HTML...you'll see the code for all of your screenies. Each starts with left vee bracket "a' and ends with left vee bracket slash "a" right vee bracket. Sorry for the way this had to be written, the blog would not allow me to actually publish the exact figures.

If you posted three screenies, then there will be three separate blocks of HTML.

I push the whole list down one line by placing the cursor at the beginning of the first line of HTML and tapping the enter key and type my opening line above the first picture's HTML block. Then below the end of each picture's HTML block I type what I want to say about that picture.

Then preview it...the preview won't place everything exactly as it will show on the site...but you can make sure the right info is with the correct picture...then publish, and it"ll work fine.

Moving the HTML "blocks" will move the screenies further apart. Right below each HTML block enter your desired text and check how it looks. Space the text lower (enter key) as needed (backspace to move text higher). Leave the next lower HTML block right below the text for the screenie above.

A few tries and it will take much less time than it does to read this.

UTC , GMT, AND ZULU TIME

Greenbrier Virtual Aviation flight reports (FR's) are to be filed using zulu time. UTC or GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) is based on celestial observations made at the Greenwich Royal Observatory in London. Greenwich is of course the origin of the Zero, or Prime Meridian, used for measuring both time and longitude globally. UTC (Universal Time Constant) has come to replace the term GMT but means exactly the same. Zulu time is simply military shorthand for the same time figures. KLWB and KHSP are both 4 hours (summer) and 5 hours (winter) behind zulu time. In other words, 1200 zulu equals 0800 summer and 0700 winter. Summer and winter in this case are defined as those times when daylight savings is in effect (summer) and when daylight savings is not in effect (winter). You should know how your local time differs from zulu (UTC) time too. There is no 2400 hours in zulu time. That time is expressed as 0000hrs.

RWY 12 SCENERY

Mike Ryder has written a set of instructions for installing the Rwy 12 scenery libraries for use with the upgraded KLWB & KHSP files available at Flightsim.com . Contact me, Dan, at dgva001@gmail.com for these instructions.

MAKING FLIGHT VIDEOS

If you are interested in making flight videos, the following things are needed:
1. A screen capture program. Try FRAPS, the current version of Game Cam (1.4) is not compatible with FS 9.
2. Windows Movie Maker 2.1 This is freeware from Microsoft and should already be in your computer.
3. Windows Media Player ( already in your computer). Save the tracks you rip from music CD's in Windows Media Player format.
4. A place to display your creation. Youtube is only one of many.
